The struggle of the self to remain intact has moved in her work from civil war, into the family, into the couple, into the individual, and finally into the theatre of phychosis: the mind itself. Kane's last play is a doozie. 4.48 is supposed to be the time at which most suicides occur, and this work openly explores the experiences of a suicidal person. The work is an abstracted mindscape of an unnamed individual, disjunctive and non-linear, retaining very few of the conventions I associate with plays three actors perform (at least three performed in the first performance listed in my copy), but no characters are given. I read this book in both languages: English, and Arabic.Sara Kane reminds me of the writings of the dear Emil Cioran.

A fuck-you suicide note intended for the world to see. Not pleasurable, but immensely poignant and strong. Regardless the perfect score, however, the drama is not perfect in the sense that it has no weak-spots, but in that it delivers perfectly what it sets out to. What is more, I reckon it is even more powerful when experienced live. Potentially dangerous and cathartic. And depressing as hell.
